Shipping Container Office Scheme Comes To Ebbw Vale

Plans have been unveiled for a flexible office space constructed from shipping containers in Ebbw Vale in South Wales. The £1.5m Box scheme will be run by Blaenau Gwent Council and has secured almost £500,000 in funding from the Welsh Government’s Transforming Towns Programme.

Insider Media reports that The Box will be based at the site of the town’s former steelworks and the 4,000 sq ft scheme will provide 21 units, ranging from 159 sq ft to 220 sq ft. It is scheduled to open in June and will target start-ups firms including those in the tech and creative industries sectors.

The Box will be next to the new cyber campus being developed by tech giant Thales and the Welsh Government, building on the existing National Digital Exploitation Centre (NDEC.)

Managed by the council’s economic development team, the units will be marketed for use by the day, but also seeking tenants for medium to long-term leases.

The council is also providing finance towards the cost of the scheme, located around half a mile from the town centre, which will form part of its existing property portfolio.

A council spokesperson said: “We are pleased that this innovative site will support the development of new and entrepreneurial businesses in the area providing a vital boost to the local economy.”

The spokesperson added thanks for the support from the Welsh Government that will provide the foundations for new economic activity and developing opportunities as part of the recovery from the pandemic.

“It is a fantastic example of how the Transforming Towns programme can help support businesses to develop and grow and a strong example of the lasting benefits regeneration can bring to Welsh communities,” they said.
